Glen Nelson Center Invests in Whetstone Media

As part of our commitment to identify, elevate, and invest in emerging media and journalism ventures led by diverse and visionary founders, Glen Nelson Center/Horizon Fund just closed on a seed stage investment in Whetstone Media.

Exciting news to share from Glen Nelson Center! Together with Supply Change Capital and Participant, Glen Nelson Center/Horizon Fund just closed on a seed stage investment in Whetstone Media.

Founded in 2017 by Stephen Satterfield – a self-described “origin forager” - Whetstone is a Black-owned media company producing content dedicated to the stories of our food – beyond today’s fixation on chefs and restaurants. In 2021, Stephen hosted Netflix’s acclaimed documentary, High on the Hog, which celebrates the influence of African and African American food on US culture. Whetstone stories – original and commissioned – are distributed in a multichannel ecosystem that today includes print (Whetstone Magazine is the number one Black-owned food magazine in the United States), audio, and television.

Since 2007, Whetstone Media founder Stephen Satterfield has spent his career redefining food and beverage as means of organizing, activating and educating.

Prior to his career in media, Satterfield was a sommelier and social entrepreneur promoting wine as a catalyst for socioeconomic development for Black wine workers in South Africa.

This new investment will allow Whetstone to expand their content and distribution in the fast-growing podcast universe, with 100 new episodes over the next several months.

This new partnership leverages American Public Media Group’s nearly 30-year experience in food, culinary and lifestyle content gained through our award-winning program, The Splendid Table. Our confidence in the future financial return of our investment rests on Stephen’s creative leadership, the proven business model of Whetstone’s distribution platforms, and the strength of our investment partners.

We expect this partnership to drive learning and engagement for APMG too. Stephen is a rising talent in the food media world. He and his team are bringing additional insights, new perspectives, and new partnerships in the food and lifestyle market which will certainly benefit our story telling. And this partnership will allow APMG to experiment and learn about moving and monetizing our content across new distribution platforms.

This is the fifth investment made by Glen Nelson Center/Horizon Fund. Other investment partnerships include The Plug, Racket, and Ad Fontes Media.

We believe this latest partnership with Whetstone accelerates the commitment of Glen Nelson Center to identifying, elevating, and investing in emerging media and journalism ventures led by diverse and visionary founders.
